| DCI India Denim Day 2008 : Run-up Campaign - 10 Nov. to 30 Nov. |

A run-up campaign was organized from 10 Nov. to 30 Nov. 2008, prior to the foundation of the India Denim Day
on 1 December, 2008.
The run-up started with the commissioning and launch of the campaign portal - http://www.indiadenimday.org.
Subsequently, Awareness Sessions and competitions were organized in schools, colleges, organizations, and road shows at public places, with our team of
Resource Persons and Volunteers - who came together with us through our associates - SAHARA Centre for Residential Care & Rehabilitation, TARSHI, SPYM,
and The YP Foundation. |

Road Shows
Two road show were organized in New Delhi during the run up campaign on 16 November and 23 November, 2008. As part of the road shows, we talked to a large
number of people about HIV & AIDS at the following locations

HIV/AIDS Awareness Sessions and competitions at Schools/Colleges
During the campaign we reached out to the students at different schools and colleges and organized Awareness Sessions which were conducted by
qualified and trained personnel, through our associates for India Denim Day 2008.
The students were provided information on HIV & AIDS, the difference between HIV and AIDS, the methods of transmission of HIV. The students were also
sensitised on the need to support People Living with HIV [PLHIVs] and the significance of reducing the levels stigma and discrimination directed at People
Living
with HIV.
- Delhi Public School, Mathura Road
An awareness session was organized at Delhi Public School, Mathura Rod, New Delhi for the students from two sections of class 8th on 24th November,
2008, the session was also attended by the peer educators of the school.
A Poster making competition was also held at the school post the session. The students whose posters were adjudged to be the best were
Ms. Disha
Kashyap, Mr. Avi Jain, and Ms. Kritika Suneja.
- Sri Venkateswara College, South Campus
An interactive awareness session was organized at the Sri Venkateswara
College, South Campus, New Delhi, on 24 Nov. 2008.
Prior to the knowledge dissemination session, a debate competition was held. The topic for debate was 'How can the awareness of HIV and AIDS be raised
most effectively - by targeting civil society at large or only high risk groups?'.
There were a total of 12 participants. Ms. Anushree Deb, Ms. Sita Priya
Moorthy and Ms. Chishta Kochar were the best performers.
At the end of the session, the participants indicated that they felt that there was a need for conducting more such sessions on a regular basis, so
that more and more people are made aware of the issues relating to the pandemic of HIV and AIDS.
- JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Haus Khas
A session was organized for the students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology on 26th November, 2008 during which the students answered a basic quiz
on HIV and AIDS. “Blood Brothers” - a short film on HIV and AIDS, made by the renowned film-maker Vishal Bharadwaj, as a part of the AIDS Jaago
Project, was also screened.
A t-shirt design competition was also held for the students of JD Institute. The students were provided with t-shirts who designed them with messages
on the theme Living Positive.
- Eicher School, Faridabad
An awareness session was organized at Eicher School, Faridabad on 28th November, 2008. The awareness session was conducted by Mr. Michael Marshall, of
Sahara Centre for Residential Care & Rehabilitation.
Poster making and debate competitions were also held at the school. The topic for debate was - 'How can the awareness of HIV and AIDS be raised most
effectively; by targeting civil society at large or only high risk groups?'
The winners of the debate competition were Ms. Shubham, Ms. Chetna and Ms. Shivani.
The winners of the poster making competition were Mr. Shashank
Sharma, Ms. Shivani Mathur and Ms. Y. Shravani.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Sessions in
Organizations
We reached out to the floor level production workers in various garment manufacturing and processing units to help dispel myths, educate them and make
them more aware of safer sex practices.
We also conducted sessions and interactive discussions with officer level staff and providing them with factual information about modes of HIV
transmission.
- Rashi Wears Pvt. Ltd., Noida
On 18th Nov, 2008 a session was organized for the women operators of Rashi Wears Pvt. Ltd., Noida. A
group of 30 women workers participated in the awareness session conducted by Mr. Michael Marshall, of Sahara Centre for Residential Care &
Rehabilitation.
The participants, as we noticed in the beginning of session, were mostly ignorant about HIV & AIDS and the various
issues that relate to germination and progression of these. The participants learnt more about prevention and caution.
At the end of the session, the responses from participants indicated that they had found the session informative and useful.
- Sarla Fabrics Pvt. Ltd., Ghaziabad
Two sessions were organized at Sarla Fabrics, Ghaziabad on 18th Nov., 2008. First session was conducted for the shop-floor workers of the company, in
which the participants were provided with information on HIV and AIDS.
The second session, held with the executives and managers of the Company was an interactive session in which the participants shared their thoughts and
views relating to the issue of HIV and AIDS and on Living Positive. Mr. Pankaj Narula, CEO also participated in the interactive session.
After initial inhibitions, the executives started coming out with the doubts / queries they had in their mind and also sharing their own thoughts. The
participants also felt that there definitely was a need for spreading more awareness about HIV and AIDS and that even though they had come in thinking
they knew all, they had learnt several things which they were simply unaware of or had their misconceptions cleared.
One of the points discussed was regarding employing people who are living with HIV. After discussion on issues such as loss of productivity, leaves
etc. It was encouraging to note that after some discussion most participants were of the view that being HIV positive is not a deterrent for carrying
out the tasks at work.
- Bhaskar Industries Ltd., Mandideep
Two sessions were organized on 20th Nov., 2008 at Bhaskar Industries, Mandideep. The sessions were conducted by volunteer trainers from the
Gandhi Bhawan Trust, Bhopal.
First session was conducted for the shop-floor workers of the company, in which the participants were provided with information on HIV and AIDS.
The second session was held with the executives and managers of the Company. It was an interactive session in which the participants shared their
thoughts and views relating to the issue of HIV and AIDS and on Living Positive.
- Benu Textiles, Amritsar
Sessions were organized at Benu Textiles, Amritsar on 26th November, 2008. The sessions were conducted by Mr. Manish Kumar from SYPM, Technical
Support Unit, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.
Mr. Sandeep and Mr. Rajat, owners of Benu Textiles were very forthcoming about taking the lead in getting the awareness sessions organized at their
company and extending their support in taking this initiative further.
First session was conducted for women shop-floor workers of the company and he second session was held with male workers of the Company. The
participants were provided with information on HIV and AIDS.
One of the workers Mr. Dinesh was identified in Benu Textiles, to be matured as a Peer educator.
- Leela Dyeing, Amritsar
An awareness session was organized on 27th November, at Leela Dyeing, Amritsar. The session was conducted by
Mr. Manish Kumar from SYPM, Technical
Support Unit, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.
Mr. Rajesh Kumar of Leela Dyeing was very forthcoming about taking the lead in getting the awareness sessions organized at their company and extending
their support in taking this initiative further.
The session was conducted with a group of around 20 shop-floor workers of the company, in which the participants were provided with information on HIV
and AIDS.
Two workers, who are very knowledgeable, have been identified in Leela Dyeing, to be matured as Peer educators. The workers shall be provided further
training by SPYM to work as peer educators so that the awareness campaign can be taken forward on a continuous basis.
The promoters of Leela Dyeing were very supportive of the initiative, and appreciated that this will enable the industry to make it possible to check
the spread of HIV in the worker community, and also, in the long run, make
it possible for the industry to create employment opportunities for infected persons, thus enabling them to live a normal self-sustaining life.
